We are still waiting for the weather to break here in Elba. It has been a busy few weeks and our students jumped right back into the swing of things with their routines, projects and classes. Just prior to April Vacation, I loved seeing our students play in the 28th Annual Volleyball Tournament. What a great tradition! The winning team also loved playing the staff and making us run all over the court. Luckily, we tied 1-1.
Next week is Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week. We are so fortunate to have such an amazing group of educators and staff that support our students and district. They go above and beyond in a moment’s notice to take care of our students and ensure that they are supported and successful in and out of the classroom. I wanted to thank the B.E.S.T. Committee for providing breakfast to our entire staff next week on Monday. Consider sending an email or note to your child’s teachers. It was also National Principal’s Day this week and I am certainly grateful to work with Mr. Langridge and Ms. Bush.
Our students finished up the NYS Math assessments for grades 3-8. The online platform worked well this time and we did not have any issues to report. Next year, all NYS 3-8 ELA and Math assessments in Elba will be online. Our students will continue to use a program called Datamate to ensure that they are comfortable with the online testing environment. The elementary staff will be continuing their efforts with the Next Generation Standards in ELA, math and science. They are engaged in professional development on the new science standards.
On Thursday, we hosted a community meeting about the proposed Preservation Project. We wanted to make sure that everyone was up to date about the tentative scope of the renovations that are needed to preserve the building. In addition, the Board of Education wanted to make sure that we would not need to raise taxes to cover the cost of the repairs. We will be using our reserves to cover the local share of the costs. For those that were not able to make it, I have included the link to the presentation. https://bit.ly/2DNj7Iu There are also maps with highlighted areas on our webpage to show where the work will be done.
Spring is a busy season and I am really looking forward to the Loved One Luncheon, Celebrate Reading Week, Prom and the countless other activities that will take place during the final stretch! Don’t forget to come out and vote on May 21, 2019 from 12:00-8:00 p.m. in the lobby of our auditorium. Our newsletter should help answer your questions about our budget, but feel free to reach out at any time if you have questions about next year’s budget.
Lastly, I continue to enjoy visiting games and track meets to see our students competing. Elba’s sportsmanship is impressive and I am proud to visit each of these competitions. I also went to the Conservation Club meeting Thursday. The students are truly talented and they had some fun watching me try and hit the clay pigeons. Safety was the true focus of the day and I could not have been more impressed by this group.
Once again, thank you for all your support, I am honored to be the Superintendent in such an amazing district that is supported by the community. Please let me know if you have any questions by calling 585-757-9967 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
