    March 13, 2019

Good morning from Elba Central School District!  Hopefully, the weather will break soon! It has been a wonderful month with so much happening.  A huge congratulations to our Varsity Girls Basketball team on a wonderful season after a tough loss on Saturday.

On Monday night at the Board of Education meeting, the Board adopted our 2019-2020 calendar that is now live on our webpage for you to access via https://bit.ly/2Cgh0w6.    Our goal was to provide this to you as early as possible so that families can plan their vacations and appointments accordingly.   The Attendance Works Foundation states, “Research shows that missing 10 percent of the school, or about 18 days in most school districts, negatively affects a student’s academic performance. That’s just two days a month and that’s known as chronic absence.”  I will continue to work with the principals to implement our attendance policies and procedures.

At the end of February, the Safety and Climate committee met and had a very full agenda.  We discussed our need to practice our lockdown and other emergency drills to ensure the safety of our students.  We will be working with the local police agencies on a possible K9 search, lockdowns and evacuations.  Now that busses will be back on campus April 1st, we will adjust and develop plans so that we could utilize the busses in the event of an emergency evacuation.  Just a reminder to please use the district office area to pick up and drop off your son or daughter during the instructional day.  Please reinforce the importance of the drills and procedures with your child so that we are prepared in the event of a real emergency.

The Wellness and Safety & Climate Committees are working on a variety of parallel issues so that our students and staff have a positive learning environment.  Many schools across the country and county have experienced a significant increase in the use of e-cigarettes, “vapes” and the most popular type, a Juul.  An article that was just released by the Messenger Post written by a student intern from Canandaigua captures their local experience quite well. https://bit.ly/2JfqZr4  There was also an article, “What parents should know about E-Cigarettes https://bit.ly/2iEwW1k that the team wanted to share.  Thanks to Mrs. Riner and Mrs. Carlie, they are starting to develop a parent resources portion of our web page to support parents in learning more about a wide range of issues that our students and community face.  Please go to our website and check out these constantly updated resources at the “Parenting Resources” page under the Parents & Students menu,  or click on the following link https://www.elbacsd.org/domain/2078

On Friday, we have our final Superintendent’s Conference Day.  We continue our professional development around the integration of technology and are addressing a significant amount of curriculum work that needs to be done.  These are two areas that we will continue to address, as we align our work to the Next Generation Standards for ELA, Math and Science, NYS Framework in Social Studies, and other areas as well.  The entire faculty was recently trained and supported in using our computer management system called GoGuardian.  We can manage student computers with this software and the faculty will continue to have in-house support to improve their comfort level.  In addition, the district continues to monitor and filter our students’ use with a program called IBoss.   Our faculty has worked hard at engaging our students using the instructional technology tools that we have available.  Using technology allows students to extend their learning beyond the day, as well as become more engaged during lessons and experience assessments similar to the online tests that they will see in the spring.

Thank you for your continued support of our students and school community.  Please reach out if you need anything by emailing me at ndale@elbacsd.org.

    Yours in Partnership.
